Default Difficulty installing distributor in '74 L82

I've installed many distributors over the years - usually in old fords. I just had the tach drive rebuilt, so I wasn't expecting the distributor installation to be difficult. No matter how many times I tried, I couldn't get it to drop all the way down. It drops within about 1/8" from where it should be in order to clamp it down. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I noticed the distributor has a 'notch' at the bottom, just above the gear. Does this notch need to align with something?

You've installed the drive gear upside-down. The end of the gear is a 'pilot' for aligning it in the bore.

I really appreciate your help! I couldn't understand why it was so difficult to install.

Once turned around, align the oil pump notch with the gear and should slide right in.

You aren't the first one to have done that. The hole for the pin is exactly in the middle of that gear. If they had drilled that hole one way or the other of center, you couldn't install it upside-down. [leave it to GM to have a 'designed-in' failure mode... ]
