Hey everyone, pretty new here, just picked up an 81 last weekend. I've got a question on the carb. I've been trying to identify it so I know what I'm working with. I'm taking the car in tomorrow to have the carb tuned (I'm in Chicago, the car is from AZ so there is about a 5,000 ft elevation difference.) The only shop in the area that will do it wants to dyno it as well to get everything dialed in. I know that the engine has had some work done to it. I'm waiting for the paperwork to get here so I know exactly what was done. I had considered just purchasing a new intake and carb combo, but the consensus here is that the QJ is a good carb when tuned properly. Anyways, I'm getting off subject. I can't seem to find this carb anywhere when searching for it online. Can anyone help?
the numbers are in a circle on the back of the carb: 17070839
The letters "RP" are above it, directly under the letters "GM"
Any help??? Any other thoughts in getting this carb tuned and paying the $300 plus to take care of the work?
I think you are looking at the wrong part of the carburetor. Read the link
In and after about 1968, stamped numbers were used for identification. The large flat area on the main body just above the secondary throttle shaft has a series of numbers stamped into the casting. In most cases these numbers can be used to identify the year and application the carburetor was originally used on.
My hunch is your carburetor has been replaced in the past. Correct for 81 is:
17081217 with 4 speed
17081218 California emissions
17081228 with Automatic
