Default Telescopic Steering 1982; not working

I recently acquired a 1982. The tilt on the steering works fine, but I can't seem to get the telescopic function to operate. I would appreciate your assistance on this.

That is a tuff one to explaining writing but the exploded diagram helps and a guy went into detail pretty good on his 82. I think his name was Vettemd. They're confusing, so do your homework before blowing it apart

You want to rotate the Lever (459083) in this blowup CCW. It is right under the horn cap.

You wouldn't be the first owner to not realize that the lever is available to loosen and tighten the telescope function.

Now if loosening the lever doesn't release the telescope function, then you will have to remove the horn cap, steering wheel, the lever, and the star screw right under it. There could be an allen set screw installed behind the star screw that Bubba may have installed to permanently lock the telescope function (before you came along).

After trying the above, if the telescope function still doesn't work, we can get into more detail as to rotating the lever and the star screw attached to it and how it actually works.

Default telescopic pictures

Does anyone have pictures of 78-82 telescopic wheel with horn cap off? Mine doesn't work and I'm thinking an allen bolt and three mismatched washers aren't exactly the right pieces.

Thanks Jim,

I removed the star screw as you said and it loosened right up. No allen set screw from Bubba. Now, is it the star screw that keeps then tension on as to how far back or forth the steering wheel travels?

Success! Telescopic function now works. I was interpreting the lever as an "up & down" motion, as opposed to a left to right locking motion. I was even able to fix my horn; which was missing the Contact Brush.

Thanks again!!

Onezulu,
You aren't the first and certainly won't be the last new Vette owner that fails to realize that the telescope function is controlled by rotating the lever right under the horn cap that is attached to the star screw. I will bet that there are many, many Vette owners driving around that think that they only have a tilt column.

I use a large phillips screwdriver to tighten the star screw until it just securely locks the telescope function. Then I attach the lever to the star screw with those two small screws and with the "thumb bump" on the lever at about the 1 o'clock position. Then I lock and unlock with the lever. Then reposition the lever to the star screw if necessary to get it to work properly.

Onezulu,

Thanks for the pictures. I'm definitely going to need some parts.
