Time to get back on the band wagon. I have been putting off taking my car a part for too long (always hard when it is running). I went to the home depot to find some heat shielding but all I could find was the fiberglass insulation.
I know that I am missing something obvious... Any hints?
Re: Heat Shielding - What is it called? (Chris@VetteFinders)
Chris,
What you need is the foiled back insulation. Go to http://www.jcwhitney.com for it. I used it under my carpets front and back, over the tunnel, under the tunnel (under the car with hi temp silicone adhesive) , and under the driver and passenger areas (under the car - left about 2 inches clearance around the exhaust pipes/header collectors). I get no heat coming in. Works great . Put the foiled side toward the heat source.

I am new to Corvettes just bought a 1971 3 weeks ago. If heat sheiding is what you use under carpets then it is the same insulation used in my TR-6 under the carpets to keep heat from comming into cockpit.
Got my stuff at Moss motors or British Victoria has it in rools.
If you need their phone numbers e-mail me for them. Pipewrench51@aol.com
Hope this is some help.
John.
I bought a big roll from JC Whitney also, but many have bought bubble wrap type from home depot. I have even seen a brand name posted. Somebody who has bought from Home Depot should be able to help you out. Of course, not every Home Depot will have everything all the time; It might have been out of stock when you were there. The product as described I believe is some kind of bubble wrap in between 2 foil layers. The stuff I got from JC Whitney is almost like carpet padding with foil on one side only. MJ
Awesome!! Thanks for the info. Basically, I was trying to avoid paying Corvette 'parts' prices. I didn't think about JC Whitney... That is probably only a little more expensive than Home Depot.
Plus, this way I don't feel guilty about not ripping my car apart this weekend. I think I will take it to the corvette cruise in...

Ok guys. What do you think... Do I need the $28.35 heat shielding that says 'protects from radiant heat' or do I need the stuff used by NASA :) for $157.45...
Re: Heat Shielding - What is it called? (still-learning)
Tim,
All depends if you want a successful Re-Entry back to earth !!
Unless you plan on orbiting the earth a few times....id scratch the NASA stuff ; you can bet your life that there is a ton of profit in that stuff ! Get the $28 stuff , but make sure it comes with foil on one side - i used it on mine and it really took care of the heat problem.
Another thing you should do, is, put a manually operated valve in the HEater inlet hose to shut off any hot water from coming into the heater/dash area ; with our cars being so old...the dampers for the heater dont close real tight anymore during the summer months, so, it heats up the dash and cockpit. The valve takes care of that little problem too. You can get them at AutoZone or make one out of a brass Gas Shutoff Valve (used for a gas appliance) with screwed / barbed fittings .... available at any hardware store.
