Default 1970 Stingray- Carburetor issues

I have a 454 big block on my vette. I am having trouble starting the car consistently. When it does, it does a lot of popping in the exhaust. Is that due to a bad air to gas ratio in my carburetor? Should i just buy a new one? Trying to avoid that though.

The seal on the accelerator pump is either worn out and/or has fallen off the pump rod. That would limit the amount of raw fuel that is sprayed into the intake to start the engine.

The popping you hear is likely due to the engine eventually starting, but having the carb choke too far open (not set up properly) and being very 'lean'. Those two conditions do not work well with each other and will cause troublesome starting.

There is probably nothing fundamentally wrong with your carb; it just needs a good cleaning and a rebuild with a good quality rebuild kit, new Viton accel pump seal, new Nitrofil [or brass] float, and to be adjusted correctly.

If you want to do it yourself, buy a rebuild kit from Cliff Ruggles (check internet for info); if you don't, send an e-mail to Lars Grimsrud (V8FastCars@msn.com) and see if he can rebuild it for you. If he does it, the cost will be reasonable and the quality will be outstanding.

It's in storage in my garage. But I wanna say it's been two years. But it hasn't been running very much or gone under a big tole.

Okay I'll have to try and adjust the choke. I do remember messing with it a few years ago. If not I'll email they guy you recommended.
