It was mentioned to me a few years ago that the original motor out of my 76 had a 4 bolt main and was a good motor to modify. Really with only under 200hp. Any truth to that short of taking the pan off???
L82 was a 4 bolt with a forged crank, L48 was a 2 bolt with a cast crank I believe, L82 could handle more, check your block casting numbers to make absolutely sure what engine it has in it, you never really know unless you check the numbers on the engine with these old cars

L48 is a 4bolt main w/cast crank and is a great motor to rebuild for sure.

My L48 I'd a two bolt. You can build a two bolt, but it's best either stud the mains, convert to a 4 bolt or even both. Bk's 383" is a studed 2 bolt runs 12 sec flat in the 1/4 mile.

I have the motor in my garage taking up room and was wondering why I should keep it or sell it as a boat anchor. Producing about 180 to 200hp ain't worth keeping. Now if it is a solid engine to build more HP then I might consider holding onto it. My understanding is a 4bolt main engine is better for adding big HP to. Maybe I no nothing!!
The 3970010 block was used for both 2 and 4 bolt applications. The L-82 was 4 bolt but you have to check the number on the front pad or pull the pan. An L-82 can be the basis for a good build but replace the stock 882 smog heads.

Pull the pan; determine 2 or 4 bolt; post a Want To Sell, and see if you get nibbles.
