I just got my engine rebuilt! Had a few hiccups but shes running. With that being said I was told the gas was old and was clogging my fuel filter. We changed the filter and got the car running however it is having difficulty gaining speed. I try to go over 45 mph and the engine just revs high and doesn't provide anymore speed. The mechanic said I should drive the car and burn off the old gas and it will be a night/day difference. Is there any other issue that can be the problem?
Revs higher and doesn't give you more speed? I doubt it's the gas, but more likely a slipping clutch or transmission depending on whether you are running a manual or auto.
Even if its old gas throttle tuning with old gas is not a great way to treat a new motor. If you think the gas is the issue, drain it and pour in some new gas. I agree with previous post, if it is making rpm and doing so smoothly (you did not say if it was missing) I would be looking elsewhere as well. you did not say what "old" is. Month, year, 5 year?
Another check, if it's an auto, after checking the fluid level, check the vacuum line to the trans... I had an old car with a bad vacuum line that was collapsing under pressure and not allowing the car to shift... So it just kept gaining Rpms ...
How old is the gas? The gas in my car was probably 3 years old and the car ran fine.
As said check he trans fluid if auto but I'll add check the distributor to make sure the timing is advancing.
The gas is less than a year and only had 5 gallons in the tank. I'm with you on the distributor however putting the car in reverse this morning took some time. It had to warm up before it went in reverse and while I was waiting for it to work it was creeping forward.

im tempted to call em and suggest to check that out
Good thing to check first
When you shift to D or R you should feel a solid umph.
If you have to wait for the car to move your trans is probably sick and needs to be gone through.
update: mechanic says that it was shifting fine when they test drove it therefore they are assuming they need to change a filter in my transmission pan. He reckon there may be something sticking. My car was only sitting for a couple of months so how did this happen?
Could be soooo many things ... Hard to say... Glad they got a good test run though... That's positive news ! I'm about to start wrenching on mine ... Just got some parts back from the shop... Gotta bolt up and enjoy! ;-) best of luck tracking down the demons, hope they don't resurface...
