I have had oil pressure checked and they said it was good. Here is the problem oil pressure at 40 psi when engine starts as it runs the pressure will drop. At idle I will show 0,20, and at acceleration sometimes 30 psi. Oil pressure will not stay constant. Is oil pressure sending unit by distributor and is it hard to replace if bad.

Yes it is next to the distributor. Shouldnt be hard to replace. You state it was checked but do not say what the true readings are? The rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1k in revolution. What weight oil are you using?

engine mileage is 39765. Not a lot of miles. Changed oil about 8 months ago and using grade 10w 30w. Car has spent a lot of time sitting and not moving. I guess I am use to other auto where oil pressure stay constant. Can you check oil pressure and gauge pressure at same time. They did not tell me what pressure was when checked.

When the pressure on the dash gauge drops lower than 20 psi.....does the engine noise under the hood become louder, like a clattering metallic sound?

No, engine sounds normal does 82 vette have safety feature that if oil pressure drops to low fuel pump will shut off.

YES...there is an oil passage above the oil filter that can be used to install another gauge and check it.

Also...the oil pressure fitting off of a C4 will work because there are two ports and the original sender can be installed along with a testing equipment.

I usually use the lower test point above the oil filter.

I'm not sure what your concern is. Its suppose to do that. Oil pressure changes with idle or rpm. Engine temp also affects psi.

I believe the fuel pump kill is for less then 8 psi.
