Currently in pursuit of buying used American racing 15x8.5 Torque Thrust D rims. What backspacing and other measurements should I look for in order to fit on my 79'
I don't think they offered backspacing as an option on the early TTD's. If I remember correctly they are all 3.5 inch backspace.
You need about a 7/16 spacer to clear the calipers also. That will put the outside of the wheels about 1 1/2 inches farther out than with the stock rallies.
Thanks for the input TRW. Longer lug studs? Where can I get those? What I understand is that I will need to use the spacers and live with the fact that I won't have much thread for the lug nuts. Therefore I will have to check the lug nuts evey couple hundred miles. The other option is to machine down the brake calipers.
Fastback, you'd be taking a BIG risk by not replacing the studs with longer ones. Even if you wind up with enough thread left to secure the nuts, you will have greatly increased the leverage against the studs. I can't give you an explanation of the physics involved but the effect is that same as using a big wrench instead of a small one. The end result is, if you hit a big bump, a wheel could go "bye-bye". Personally, I'd find some wheels that fit without spacers.
Vetterodder, you have a valid point about the wheels being dangerous. My vette is used for drag racing and everydsy driving 7 months out of the year. Too much pressure on the studs will probably make them break. As for Torque thrust IIs, I'm not really into the chrome look although it is a beautiful wheel. Fortunately, Vintage Wheelworks makes a replica called the Vintage 45 that should fit without any problems. I'll post pics if it works out.
Yeah Terry, It looks like vintage will be the best choice. I had contacted American Racing and they advised me the Torque thrust D would be problematic to fit. I also contacted Vintage out by you and they were able to assure me their V45s would fit. Their V48s are nice too. Thanx.
Fastback, check out my 1st reply, American Racing makes the TTD's as the CL205 in all the sizes that the TTII's are made in. I don't think its on their webiste, but they have beenn advertising them for months and I emailed them about it as well.
