Where's the HEI tach filter?

My tach is playing all sorts of tricks. Showing idle too low (200 rpm -- I don't think so!) and too high at speed (200-300 rpm too many). I've heard it's probably the tach filter (this is an electronic tach). But I don't see the darned thing! Anybody know where it is?

And can I bypass it (for test purposes)? :smash:

It looks like a condencer and is mounted to the intake manifold near the throttle bracket.

Toy is right and I understand you can bypass it but it will fluctuate wildly...

Ah, so that is why I can't find mine, it doesn't exist. Grr, damnit Bubba. You had to leave the engine alone and only touch shoot electrical stuff. I can fix the engine, electrical is a bit harder, but I'm quite competent.

Under 1500rpm it is okay, after that the higher it goes the more it bounces.

Hay I don't have one of those :eek: Where do I get one? Do they come with factory connectors or do I have to splice it in?

Yes they are factory original. I can pull the ignition shield off tomorrow and give you a pic if you wish.

I went to the local Pik-n-Pull today, searched thru about 60 cars (most station wagons and 4 doors came without tachs) and with 3 cars left, a 79 Gran Prix had one !! The guy at the counter looked suspiciously at me (in Spanish) when I told him it was a tach filter, and charged me 3 bucks...will wire it manana... :yesnod:
