Storage compartment restoration
I replaced the carpet and the storage door main frame and individual door trim were all shot and needed to be replaced.
I first cut the carpet pieces to shape and glued them to the doors. I pushed the trim down over the doors and drilled small holes so the trim could be held in place with flat head screws.

Went to the local hardware store and bought some 5mm stainless button head machine screws, a 5mm - .08 tap, a #19 drill bit, and a piece of ¾ x 1/8 flat stock 36” long. The screws will replace the rivits and the flat stock will be drilled and tapped.

I put the flat stock up against the frame and traced out all the holes both for the hinges and for the frame to mount to the car. I put blue painters tape on the stock to make it easier to trace the holes.

I drilled out the holes for the doors with the #19 drill bit and used the 5mm tap to thread them. The other holes can be any size as long as the frame mounting screws fit through them.

The button head screw heads were thin enough so that it wouldn’t keep the door from closing all the way but I ground them down a little anyway just incase and there is still plenty of room for the allen wrench.

Now this step is optional but I refilled my glass with my home brewed Imperial double chocolate stout.

Placed the flat stock with the 5mm tapped holes behind the frame after I cut a few inches off the end to the correct length and fastened the door hinges to the frame. I also used blue loctite but it's probably not necessary.

I ground down the protruding screws. There is enough meat in the 1/8” flat stock for the screws to have a good grip.

Installed and works like a charm.
