Default Fuel pump?

Ok, Posted yesterday about a qjet problem but haven't gotten any responses so I'm trying this topic here... Qjet was just rebuilt last week. put into service yesterday and it idled fine. Pumped good strong spurts of gas when throttle was blipped. Tried running it down the street and it died. Nursed it home pulled into the drive and it quit. Hasn't started since. I removed the fuel hose from the carb and as my wife turned the car over there were very week "dribbles" of fuel from the line. I'm leaning towards the problem being the fuel pump and not the qjet. Anyone give me a basic test or two that I can do without special equip? I've got a vac gauge and your basic tools, but I don't know if I can use this to test the fuel pump. Any help out there?

The answers you got to your initial question were excellent. (?)

most vac testers work for fuel as well under 20.00 at Harbor freight if I remember right. Was it doing this BEFORE the rebuild is why you rebuilt it?
if not I would blame a bad carb rebuild.
I had issues with mine stalling when hot. it was my S hose going from the frame to the pump. Someone used a straight hose when replacing the pump. Could be a lot of different things.

Try taking off the gas cap. Was there a large vacuum in the tank? If so, I'd try your test of the fuel pump again, with the gas cap off.

Do you have an inline filter anywhere before the carburetor?

I did the rebuild and she was idling fine. Installed a new pump and she started and ran but immediately started spraying fuel out the top of the carb. Found it psi is between 7-9

you now have a problem with the needle and seat, what kind/brand part # of fuel pump did you install, 4 to 5 psi for street, 6 to 7 psi for strip

It's an Airtex I believe model 41240. I called their tech today. It's rated at 7.5 to 9 psi

Had the same issue with2 brand new Edelbrock carbs. If its shooting out the top you have a stuck needle seat. maybe dirt stuck in there. I think my issue is when I put on new rubber lines they got rubber shavings in the fuel.

Ive taken the carb Apart about 4 times since it started doing this looking for something I missed our did that could have the Float stuck or needle not seated properly. I haven't been able to find a thing. I'm assuming the new pump with that much psi would put that valve directly out of its seat and cause the problems I'm having

I'm using the same pump. It puts out more psi than a q-jet can handle. I put a regulator on it and regulated it to 5 psi.

Good to know!! I actually ordered an OEM part from Ecklers on Monday. I had to cut the steel line by the carb when the fitting froze to the line. I replaced it with a section of rubber hose. I figured I might as well install a new metal line in addition to the OEM fuel pump. So did you experience the same situation when you installed the Airtex? Did you have fuel spilling out of the top of the carb?

Yes, it would blow right past the seat.
I was able to get it to stop by setting the float level very low, but then the bowl level was not regulated properly which created other problems.

Pour some fuel in the carb and fire it up!
Pretty basic system if no fuel is being delivered, pump ( diaphragm leaking ), filter plugged, hoses collapsed like a flex hose, worn cam lobe ( highly unlikely ), and the one that is missed is the sock in the tank on the pickup line, I usually use air pressure and blow it off.
Fuel pressure 4-5 psi as stated above is all thats needed.
Edlebrock carbs have frustrated many people just like a holley I would keep a Qjet
If you think dirt is the problem in a carb run the car then pinch the feed line off till it runs out of gas and stalls, then un pinch and re-fire, this sometimes flushes the dirt out.
If carb leaks fuel alot then the float is not right, jammed, or to much psi .
