Default Shock suggestions

Dang,,been two years since i last signed in and i dunno how long since last post,,but anyway....

New tires on the tired old thing and it's telling me time for some new shocks..
Now,,i dont need race shocks as i dont but get a tad fiesty only time to time.
Still has the tired old suspension under it from when it was built i think.
I just need something simple and cheap so that when i hit a small bump it dont bottom out and rattle.
rides kinda rough right now and the way the roads are after this NH winter we just had i would kinda like something a little more cushy .
Yeh,,kinda embarassed to say it but,,,i'm looking for a softer ride and looking for something "reasonably" priced..(cheap)..
between the Ol and myself we total over 135 years of age and a buckboard ride aint gonna make it anymore.

So,,as far as everyday auto parts store shocks go is there any preferance for something that would give a 1/2+ comfortable ride ???

I know this is a performance thread but who would know better ?
Tnx.

I put KYB shocks on mine. Haven't driven too much, but they seem a bit softer than the ones that were on it. More driving ahead. They were under $40 per shock.

I think of it as more like riding a surf board with my head banging on the T top. I don't think there is really much that can be done to soften the ride more than worn out shock could do. New shocks would keep you from bottoming out and making noise but it's going to ride firmer with less up and down motion. Or maybe that is what you want.? My 2 cents.

Sounds like Monroe shocks would be good for your car

Well,,,,,,,i think the shocks are worn enough that they dont even have a soft ride left in them,,no absorbing at all

On the KYB and Monroe,or other brands, how can you tell what kind of ride they give without trying ?

Guess thats why i'm asking ,you cant..

Maybe i should post this in the "general" forum as it really is not performance related ?

Tnx.

I just bought AC-Delco gas shocks from Zip Corvette. The budget was tight and they were dirt cheap. They are acceptable, but will get upgraded eventually. Can't go wrong for about $150 for shocks all the way around.

KYB GR-2's-They are fairly soft and give a nice ride. Not expensive.

Monroes are decent as well for a mass market shock looking for decent ride. Heck, I put 2001 Monroe Sensatracs Impala POLICE struts and springs all around on my 2001 Grand Prix and it rides great, not overly stiff and handles, well, like a police car.

I have monroe sense tracs on there now, not a bad ride at all. just ordered bilsteins from summit, looking for a little sportier ride. If you're just looking for a good shock, reasonable priced and a good shock for the money look at the monroes.

Monroes on mine, they ride nice. Everyone expects it to be a buckboard, and are pleasantly surprised that it's not.

I'm no Rickey Racer though.

I have Monroe Sensa-tracs on my '34 street-truck.....they make it ride like a car/they cost a little more than the basic Monroe shocks.

(I also am not looking for a firm ride any more/too many bulging discs)

I did the Billstein HD's all around.
I was not looking for a rally car so the sport series sounded a little stiffer than I was looking for.
I planned on doing it once so I spent the bucks.
How often do we wear out shocks really on a weekend driver?
I like the ride combined with my BFG's T/A RWL radials.
I can get huskey in the turns if I want w/o getting beat up on a long ride.

well, i just got mine back together last night. after adding the VBP 550 front springs 360 rear composite spring and QA1 shocks the ride on the interstate is remarkably smooth , it is firm but never harsh. it takes irregularities without harshness and is totally enjoyable to drive. the upgrade in handling is where it really shines. i will be adding the Smart Struts and sway bars in the future, but im in NO rush. my front end sat way high after the aluminum heads etc so i cut 3/4 of a coil off the front which is exactly where i wanted it.

I just installed the black AC Delco Premiums and like them - or, put plainly, my wife likes them, too. I was playing around with them in some cornering maneuvers this weekend and I thought they were just fine. With the new BFG Radial T/A's the system feels like a slot car in the turns to me, and it manages the rampant potholes on many of the local roads, ok. I'm happy as well as my wife so would do over.

I hesitated with the Bilsteins because of insufficient info from their site or the forums. While they get rave reviews, the feedback was really subjective. "Wow-love 'em" and similar doesn't explain the trade-offs - did cornering improve, or the comfortable cruising ride suffer... or improve? Also, mine has the composite rear spring and P255's which have more surface to slap around on road irregularities when cruising the beautiful back-roads. So, in the land of the unknown the Delco Premiums won out here, upgrading from two year old "Sensi-Tracks" by PO (not sure who makes but they already had issues after 1500 miles) and with no sign of regrets. Just my humble experience.
