Noisy AC compressor
I have a R12 system thats not worked in years. Replaced broken interior controls and I have air blowing like it should. Compressor will not engage unless switch is jumped and then it makes a grinding noise. I have no testing equipment. I'm looking for advice on my next step. I may have done all I can and its time for a professional shop.

It's going to be a crap shoot in trying to do much with your system without a gauge set. If the system was empty/low on Freon and you jumpered the clutch, the noise you may be hearing could be the compressor running without oil, which is the same as running your engine without oil. The noise could also be the bearing. Since there are differences in systems throughout the years, it's always helpful to disclose the year of your car.
