I got in my car today and tried to put both of my windows down. Passenger side went down but the drivers side didn't. I then found out the passenger side wont go back up. The gauge shows draw when you use either switch but there is no movement or sound from the motors. So currently I have one window stuck down and one window stuck up
Any ideas?
The switches are probably carboned-up from electrical arching. That build-up increases resistance and blocks current flow to the motors. Since you are seeing current draw on the meter, power is 'trying' to get to the motors...but it's being lost at the switches.
Remove them. Mark them so you know which side they came from and proper orientation in the console. Then, carefully bend the crimps on the bottom side to open up the switches. There are some small springs in there, so remove the pieces slowly and carefully on top of a large clean workarea. Use sandpaper or Dremel wire brush to clean off the contacts. Then give them a wipe of dielectric grease (Radio Shack or battery terminal grease in the little packs at auto parts counters). That will block air from reaching the contacts and prevent arc-burning when you reassemble the switches.
P.S. This is one case where repairing the original parts is 10 times better than buying new ones. The new ones don't last.
I had a similar problem recently and spent a few hours diagnosing the entire system until I found the culprit... My problems and solution are in my thread called, replaced rag joint... Happy coincidence... And unfortunate side effect...
Lots of good info there from myself and others... ;-)
I've got an 81 and had a similar problem. It wasn't until I remembered that I unplugged the connector from the fuse junction that I found the problem. Plugged it back in and both Windows worked. Maybe you've got something like this that loosened up
