Does anyone know how to confirm the vacuum advance units? I bought this one and thought it would say AR23 as per Lar's paper, but instead it has a 236 stamped on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Harbor freight sells a $6 "Transfer Pump" which includes several hose adapters. If the input side is connected to a vacuum gauge and the advance can, the vacuum needed to fully deflect the diaphragm can be easily tested. It holds a surprisingly good vacuum! It can also be used while the dissy is installed in the engine during road tests.
So today, another member and I were testing the supposed VC1853 vacuum can and noticed that the advance kept coming in past the 12.5" rating all the way up to 15". Is there always that much play in these cans?
VC1853 AR23 1976 350 All Calif. 5-7 7.5 @ 11-12.5
1976 350 Vette Calif., Exc. Hi Perf
1976 400 All, Exc. Calif
1975 350 4-bbl
1974 350 All w/1112528 Distr.
1978 350/400 Heavy Duty Truck, Exc. Calif, Exc. Hi Alt.
If I'm reading the specs right for that can it's saying 7.5* of camshaft advance @ 11"-12.5" of vacuum.
That would be 15* of crankshaft advance.
Is that your question?
