After seeing a similar question regarding a choice of aluminium heads or a roller cam.
I would like to get some feedback on another question.
What would you build?
355ci with retro roller, or a 383ci with flat tappet cam
I don’t really want to get into compression ratio, intake, head combo questions, just what would you rather spend your dollars on, stroke or cam?
It depends on what your power goal is. The 383 with a flat cam should make more power. I went with a 355, roller cam and AFR heads because it met my performance needs. I was able to source a new free forged GM crank from one of my dad's abandoned projects, so that helped make the decision, too.
I'd go Stroker. Save money and go roller. It took me two years to build my 400" save money, buy parts, repeat. Look at it this way, if you went stroker and flat tappet, you'd eventually by a roller, if you saved a little more money up front and bought the roller you'd save money by not buying the flat tappet cam, lifters and springs.
