17 wheel size question

I think that using the best rim width helps the tire run cooler and keeps the tread blocks more square with the road extending the tires life because you have more rubber on the road. 8 inch is fine if you might be using less than a 255 size

235/55/17 tires are virtually the same diameter as stock tires (255/60/15, 225/70/15) and treadwidth is just a wee bit wider than an 8" wheel, and there is a large selection in this tire size. When I finally get my 8"x17" wheels, it is the tire size I have decided to go with.

Has anybody even tried the 17x9 (w/5" b.s.) Year One Rally Wheels on their Corvette? I emailed their tech department and here's the response...
Thank you for contacting Year One. We regret that we did not receive your prior inquiries. These wheels were not trial fit on Corvettes. Due to car-to-car production tolerances, and also due to possible unknown chassis, suspension or body issues, we recommend careful measuring or using a tire/wheel fitting tool, even for the car types which were trial fit. We also recommend measuring both sides of the car we sometimes find less clearance on one side.
I also found this tire and wheel comparison tool while searching the internet in the past; you may find this helpful as a first step.

Note that tires of a certain size designation vary in actual size from manufacturer to manufacturer so be sure to get the specs for the tire you intend to use.

This is a very noncommittal committal. The only good thing from this response was the link they gave me. The problem is I drive a 69' 427 Corvette Convertible w/4speed.....not a Chevelle or Impala.

I have 17 x 8's on the front with 4 1/4" BS, 245/45/17.
Rear is 9.5 x 17's with 285/40/17's 4 1/4" BS
It's the max you'll fit and the rears do rub a little in the arch. 245/55's will look big but will work on a stock height car. I had 255/50's all round before this and they looked good.
Our vette's have a big arch and a 40/45 series tyre only looks good on a lowered car.
