Default What Crate Engine did You Install?

I am a new C3 owner and used to a little more juice than the 200hp my 72 came with. I plan to install a crate motor but I hear there are some fitment issues with some. I'd like to hear about anyone's experiences on here.

I built my 400" small block. Any gen 1 crate engine will fit with the exception of clearing the hood. I'm not for sure of your power goal and intended use, but check out cnc-motorsports. Good guys with great prices. Will build the engine to meet your power goals, dyno it and ship it to you. Like I said the hood might be about the only fitment issue you have unless you go big block or ls.

Fortunately, the hood shouldn't be a problem. I am looking for modest power- 300-400hp

I replaced the 454 in my 70 coupe with a 454 crate engine built by Carolina Engines. It was a direct fit and included everything. They machined my original intake manifold to fit the new engine set up so it fits under the stock hood with no issues. The engine dyno's at 415 HP with 515 lbs of torque. Total cost was $4,500 and included a 5-year warranty. It has run great for over 5 years now and I would recommend these guys to anyone for high quality and an affordable price.

Sounds reasonable to me- I'm also planning on a new tranny too. 70mph needs another gear

My '72 vert came with a Muncie and L48 engine, this in '95 It has been a hobby car for some years, and so in '97 I got a 355 4 bolt main truck block, which currently has L98 #113 aluminum heads on it....headers, and a highly modified LT1 induction with HEI dizzy in stock location....obvously injected for years now....roller cam/rockers.

at one point the overdrive became mandatory with the move to Florida, so in went a 700 with my stock 336 rear.....now here is the trick, that first gear in the 700 is about 3.08 or something close, and when in traffic you pull out across a street and the trans upshifts into second gear before you get 1/2 way across, it's too much of an RPM drop.....ok for heavier vehicles, but in a vette, it's a bit much....to boot the 700 requires tons of mods to the tailshaft mount/crossupport, and driveshaft has to be shorter....

I finally switched to a 200 4r much lighter, and with more manners suiting the car....you need to put in a TRANS GO shift kit.....
stock driveshaft length.....obviously the tail pipes need changed, I assume you going for headers....

My 700r4 shifts auto matically, but I'd rather shift it manualy.
