vacuum canister
If you're referring to the actuator for the wipers it was originally zinc or cadmium plating with a gold toned dichromate wash.
The actuator can be replated or you can achieve a 'similar appearance' with paint.
Eastwood sells a 3 step paint finishing system for the headlight and wiper door actuators and other suppliers sell a paint that can be used in a single can.
The painted finish can look pretty good but is a bit different than the plated finish.

This is my attempt to try to duplicate the look with 4 cans of paint from the hardware store.
Silver, Copper, Green, and Red.
First a coat of silver, then a light coat of copper, then a dusting of the green and red.

That vacuum actuator operates the wiper door that 68-72 cars had.
73 was the first year of the 'long hood' which eliminated the wiper door and grill.
I've always thought it was a cost cutting measure.
