I am in the process of reinstalling the A pillar trim.
I purchased the black caulking strips, what a mess to work with.
Any suggestions of a product that can be used as caulking between the pillar and the first level of trim.
I have the foam strip that fits between primary trim and the trim piece holding the weather stripping.
That tar/caulk is a mess to work with.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Max
I didn't use any adhesive on the pillar. I just screwed them in and used the clip on the pillar. I didn't need any on the rear pillar either. Just the door got adhesive. The set I got fit perfect. I never drive in the rain so I wasn't worried.

Thanks for your response, nice ride, looks great.
Not only rain, but how about wind whistle?

Hi Max,
I flattened the 3M strip caulk to a thin ribbon to use between the retainer and the ss trim and the ss trim and the windshield post. I rolled it flat between sheets of wax paper.
I needed to use the weatherstrip adhesive on the a-pillar strip to stop it from moving slightly when the the roof panel is installed and it's weatherstrip meets the a-pillar weatherstrip.
Regards,
Alan
No whistle from the weatherstripping....but I get the worst whistle from the plastic holes the t-tops sit in. I had some nice cork bungs I made for them, but lost them. I learned to live with it now.

Alan,
Where did you pick up the 3M strip caulk. I looked on line today. No luck. Went to Lowes, not sure the caulk they had would work.
I even considered plumbers puddy, but that sounded like Bubba.
Still looking.
Thanks

Have you tried NAPA? I'm on the west coast, north of you, and mine carried it.
Also, have you considered 3M 4200 marine polyurethane sealant for this job? It's readily available at any marine supply in my area and seems well suited to this job.

Alan, are you referring to the top cap where the t-top and a-pillar meet?
This is a question I wanted to know in this thread.
There must be some sort of sealant between the windshield molding and the A pillar, if not there is a good chance water will pass through there.
Between the pillar retainer and the windshield molding was a thin rubber tape.
The tape is not available (yet)... but you can buy what is called Channel tape at your local glass shop in a roll... it'll do the trick for you.
One key that is often overlooked when installing pillar weatherstrips. Make sure the pillar weatherstrip retain will sit perfectly flat on the windshield molding. When people remove the weatherstrips they always seem to miss one screw. When this happens the head tries to pull through the pillar retainer... If you have one that has had this happen it will rock on the windshield molding and will need to be fixed before installation.
Donnie- I answered your message this morning too.. The top of the pillar should be flush to the chrome header.

Thanks, I had posted here before I read your email.
I didn't need to remove the retainer molding as the sealant was still good.
Just removed the w/s and cleaned the old glue residue from the retainer.
I was just concerned about the top of the w/s being snug against the chrome cap.
I know this is a very old thread but thought I would ask here instead of starting a brand new one.
What is the trick to get the weather stripping into the retainer? I can see where it looks like it should go, but the retainer/metal is crimped, I would assume to hold in the original weather stripping.
What’s the best way to ‘open’ back up the retainer so that I can get the weather strip in there the right way? Or is it best just to buy new retainers?

After cleaning up that channel, try heating up the weatherstrip. Boiling water works. Then get the rubber as hot as you can handle it and dry it off before inserting. This should help get it into the lightly glued channel.

Consider starting a new thread rather than asking your question within a very old one. You can always link the old thread within for context if you wish.
