Going to pull the engine from my 73. I have access to a typical 1 ton, 4 hole, folding hoist that I have used in the past to pull/install the engine from the side after removing a tire. This has always been a royal pita in my tiny garage.
Question: if one simply removes the front nose (first 7 inches or so) can you pull the engine from the front or is the car still too long? I don't actually have the hoist with me now so I can't measure at the moment.
1 ton lift is not as deep as a 2 ton.
1 ton will not work period. not from front, not from side.
Get a 2 ton lift it has a longer reach, and it is needed for Corvette install.

By the "nose" I meant the front bumper (so the hoist could get closer).
I have pulled/installed the engine from the side several times but it is really aggravating and a little nerve wracking too. Since you posted a 1-ton will not work, I am only 50% certain that the hoist I used was a 1-ton unit. Will find out for sure today before I borrow it again from a friend.
With the 2-ton hoist, can you leave the front bumper on?
And now that I see the pic of the 2-ton hoist, I am convinced that we pulled the engine from the side with the 1-ton hoist. The crane we used was nowhere near that big.
Thanks again for posting.
Depends on the lift brand, some 2 tons won't lift from the front,
also depends upon which year model Vette after the chrome bumper the nose got longer.
"Nerve racking" - drop a BB my yourself ... down right scary !
This is a whole project in itself. I have removed the original cover and installed a new one with the intention of repainting the car. The bolts are hard to get to and it is not easy to get that thing to line up. Any mistakes and you are going to need paint. I would avoid this unless the car needs paint and the front bumper needs to come off anyway.
The hoist I use is a duplicate of a rental hoist. My brother in law built it. There are differences in the hoists structurally so just having a 2 ton cylinder doesn't guarantee you'll have enough reach.
remove a tire, come in from the side, remove engine. I also put it back in that way. I would not disassemble the body if I didn't have to.
Last time I did it I removed the hood and the radiator. Makes everything easier and I removed the engine only (not the tranny).
I have a small garage also; so when I'm done I have the tranny supported across the frame rails and then I just the wheel back on and push the car back into the garage.
