I looked through the forum and see a few threads from people wanting to do this. I however only found an alternator relocated with a home made bracket in a C2. Anyone use one of these brackets or know if they work. I have a long water pump and PS removed. Hooker side headers also. I held the alternator in place and it looks like the belts will line up. It is however a tight space and not sure where the bracket will actually put the alternator.
Why do you want/need it down there? Makes it tough to adjust/change a belt.
Lots of production cars put them in low position, so there should be no problem if you get the pulleys lined up and have adequate belt contact with the alt pulley.
Pretty much to get it out of the way and open up top visibility of the motor and get the wires down low out of the way. No power steering pump to get in the way.
Have this setup on mine. Non vette but it will clear steering FP etc should anyway. Pace Performance used to sell it for Richard Childress Racing, discontinued. You can get the same thing from Chris Jones Racing products hes awesome to deal with can get you about any pulley config you want and do the math on what size pulleys are best for you.
Stripped the anodize off everything andpolished myself didnt come this way. It was pricy but wanted something Im not going to see on someone elses car at cruise night. Has a 1 wire 50 a alt which wasnt enough Chris built me an 80/120 that does the job. Ask him about the Vette waterpump. Speedway motors may sell something similar but it seems to be cheaper grade stuff. Wanted a PS pump and alt housing that wont blow at high rpm
Its been awhile since Ive owned a C3 not sure if there would be crossmember/steering interference??? Call him anyway maybe hes got a solution just for your alt thats a single bolt on deal.
Nice work I wish I had fab skills to do that;those are tucked in there real nice
Tensioner is a nice touch!
Next yr I want to get a tiny import smog pump have Chris fab a billet bracket hide some stainless tubes and make my car truly legal just for kicks. Just wont be ugly and in the way like the factory stuff.
Waste of money but cant get the idea outta my head
An alternator down below is not the ideal place if you drive your car. It was put way up there on the top of the engine for a reason....
Try starting your car then using a garden hose on the alternator and see if it still works. For those of you that point out that some were on the bottom from the factory, why are they not there anymore...?

Ummm- they are still doing it- I have seen several of the transverse mounted front wheel drive that do it as well- some did have a splash shield. Mine's tucked in behind the crossmember- I really don't think it'll be a problem.
This one has two alternators- one low and one not so low-
And this one is actually watercooled....if you are really worried about water splashing on it....
