Its been many years since I've rebuilt a motor so work with me. I am about to drop the distributor back in. I am on compression stroke. I pulled #1 plug, felt compression with my finger and used a flash light to watch piston come up and come to a complete stop. I should have bought the piston stop tool but an trying to get the motor back in the car today or tomorrow. Is the point or tip of the large V or mark on the balancer TDC, and should I back the piston down?? I'm thinking this is about 10 degree before TDC. trying to get it right the first time around.

That's actually about 4 degrees after TDC. The engine spins clockwise as viewed from the front. TDC can be very hard to achieve with the Mark 1 Calibrated Eyeball, especially when peering through a sparkplug hole, as there is very little movement when the piston is within a few degrees of TDC. I'd set it at o and call it good enough for government work.

Edit: Your timing tab should jibe with the one in figure 4 on this page:

As Scott stated, you're after top center in the photo. You want to set it up at about 12 before. You can e-mail me for my paper, "How to Install your Distributor" for complete instructions and photos of the process.

In my earlier post I said to set it at 0, I was thinking you just wanted to get to TDC. Of course you'll need some advance for start-up, like Lars says. Sorry about that.

Thanks guys. I'm at 12 BTDC. Dropped the distributor in. Walked the rotor to pointing directly at the front right tower for #1 cylinder. I think I'm spot on.
