Default Engine year and temp problems

Hi all,
Sorry for the long absence, retired and took the boat south for the winter. Just getting back to working on the car. '73 350 4 sp. The previous owner said that he had a crate engine installed. He could not remember what year. The number cast on the drivers side of the rear block is 14010201. If I need to find a different number tell me where to look.

The reason for the question is I am trying to get the temp gauge to work properly. According to Zips, the sensor for a '73 is large, use a 15/16 socket. The one in this engine uses a 13/16 socket. I know the different years use different gauges/sensors. Trying to find out what I need to change/buy. I don't think there are any ports on the water jacket of this engine to fit the larger sensor in.

Hi CK,
When I look at that block casting numbers the info indicates it's a 305 cu. in. block from the early 80s.
Hopefully it was used for something more interesting too!
Regards,
Alan

Is it possible the last number is a 7 and not a 1?

The original temp sensor on a '73 was on the driver's side head. Is that were yours is located?

Willcox wrote a fantastic article on this subject. They mapped out the Ohm readings needed for all the different year Corvette temp gauges.

This will allow you to test your sender or the sender you purchase to see if it is going to read correctly for the stock gauge in your car.

Good post here on how to take the measurements from the sender

If you have a digital meat thermometer you can add it to your pot of water to get the readings at the appropriate temp that corresponds with the gauge.

I cleaned it up a bit better. Yes the last number is a 7. The temp sensor is located in the drivers side head. But much smaller than the one specified for a 73.

Thanks for the links. But neither one of them seem to work.

14010207 is an early 80s 350 cu in. casting number.

Can't help you with the temp probe issue.

You can probably put the correct temp sensor in the intake manifold. One of the ports near the thermostat housing in the water passage will work. You can either take the correct sensor and take it to a machine shop where the brass threads can be turned down to match the ones in the newer, small sensor. Or you can probably tap the existing hole in the head to fit the correct sensor. Search the forum for "temp sensor" and you will find several discussions regarding the same situation you face.
