Interior dye primer coat needed?

Interior dye primer coat needed?
Just ordered a new dash pad and cans of dye to repaint other interior pieces. Anyone with experience with this stuff use the primer or is it unnecessary? Thanks in advance.

Use it. It allows the dye colour coat to adhere properly. And before you use the primer, clean with a detergent solution to get any remnants of any silicone-based products such as Armor-All off the surface.

I didn't use the primer on my original t-top liners and such when I dyed them in 1999. I just did a through wipe down with wax and silicone remover (Prep-Sol). That alone left the finish dull and ready for the dye. I've had no problems in the 3 years since I dyed the parts.
If you're going to be dying interior parts that are in high-wear location (door panels, console, etc) then the primer may be cheap insurance.

OK- sounds like a good idea to use it if possible. I have already ordered the dye and would like to avoid waiting for the primer. Is this stuff really special or would a local paint store with knowledge of automotive paint be able to help me out?

I washed the parts with hot soapy water and dried them, then I wiped the parts with acetone, two times, to really clean the parts. One of the parts is a leather wrapped steering wheel. One year later the black dye is still on and looking good.
