Default water pump noise
Can water pumps make a rattling noise? Is it a sign of impending failure?

Yes...it can be the bearing in the water pump or the fan clutch...and if bad enough...it can fly apart.

Wiggle it forward and back. If the shaft comes in and out a .20-.030 it's gonna be time for a water pump. I've been running mine like that for the past 5000 miles with no problem but it will fail or get louder as time goes on.
