IMHO, a shift kit is well worth the money. Better pressure control inside the trans, less slippage, better shifts, and overall longer life. I won't build one without a shift kit.
My experience with the Trans-Go kits has been that I set them up for police/taxi per the instructions, and the shifts are firm , but not rough under part throttle (regular driving) and then get aggressive when you jump on the go pedal.
Most kits (Trans-Go) are not easily reversible. The instructions specify drilling some of the holes on the spacer plate to larger sizes. Short of replacing the spacer plate, you can't easily go back to stock.

and which would be best for a mild 350, weekend cruiser and spirited driving thru hilly roads, not into drags.
edit: also put an extra oil cooler up front when motor was rebuilt.
