I placed a temp gage in the top center vent of the dash and went for a drive. With the A/C off the temp went up to and stayed at 140*F It didn't matter if I was moving down the Freeway or cursing around town. The engine temp ran around 200*F. With the air on the temp was about 60*F. I have checked for air leaks and plugged most of them in the heater box and ducts. The biggest hole is where the heater hoses go into the bottom of the heater box. Is this area supposed to have a seal around the hoses? It would seam that if the air temp were lower than the A/C would work better. I have put a shut off valve in the heater hose and replaced the blower motor. Is there anything else I should do?
Some folks are hooking up there vacuum system so that the fresh air door is closed all the time and the recirculation door is open. I know on mine there is no "fresh " air coming thru the vents when in the vent mode, it's very warm air. So I just about always run my AC on Max which is the recirculation mode.
And I know my seals and doors are good.
I do the same. The temps with the A/C off is with everything off. No blower, no vent, no nothing. Just the air in the vent alone. I was thinking about making a heat shield around the box in the engine compartment. I would like to plug the area that the hoses enter the box but I am not sure how I will do it. I don't want to Babba it up.
You might want to put insulation under the rug. Lots of heat coming from the engine compartment & floor.
Most cars came with a tar like crap around those lines. You could use duct seal instead. It should be available in a hardware store. Looks and works like modeling clay but doesn't dry out and this is what it's for. You can't botch it up.
