Is the gas tank of 69s lined with an orange colored substance? I have scratched inside of tank and it does not appear to be rust and drained gas is clear. Thought i had posted but didn't see it so i apologize if this is a duplicate.
Hi 69,
Originally the interior of the tank had the same surface as the exterior… galvanized.
Could someone have tried to install a sealer of some sort or might this be 'funk', (a chemist's descriptive word), left from evaporating gasoline?
Regards,
Alan
Thanks for posting the picture. Definitely not what i'm seeing inside my tank. As i mentioned in a prior post there a bunch of silicon like particles floating around in the tank too. At this point rather than chase this forever and not be sure, I'm going to order a new tank and resolve the problem. Not looking forward to the project, but in the long run I think it will be worthwhile.
New to the board and haven't figured how to post photos, but thanks for the responses.

69.. installing a new tank in the car is really not that bad. Better to replace than to deal with issues in the fuel filter..

Make sure you do your research before ordering a new fuel tank. I installed a new tank in 2009 that I ordered from a Florida company that starts with the letters Eck and it didn't last. Rusted out! I installed a new one Saturday along with a new sending unit and all new rubber connections at the fuel tank and the fuel pump, and flushed out the metal fuel lines.
Before I started the engine, I pumped any old remaining fuel through the old inline fuel filter into a bucket. When new clean fuel started coming out, I installed the new fuel filter and connected it to the carb. and the engine started right up.
I am also getting ready to replace the tank in my 78. It came with a hard plastic liner, that is no longer available. But I plan on using one of the POR products to coat the inside of the tank before I put gas in it. FIgure it can't hurt. I've used similar products in motorcycle tanks and it does keep down the rust. Good luck and welcome to the forum.
