Hooked up the shift linkage now that the trans and engine are in.
Have all 4 gears but but can not get the gate into reverse as I pull the T and compress the spring.
Looking at all the diagrams I feel I have replaced it as it was supposed to including reverse sensor switch assembly to the case.
How does the interlock work? What does the reverse lever pin do? And lastly if there is any special sequence for set up is required to get reverse to work?
Oh and yes the linkage is connected and I can manually move the lever on the transmission to reverse and back. Its just that the shifter does not allow me to move the reverse at all like its locked out.
Is there a way to check this like remove the T-handle from the shifter and try it or something like that?
Are you using an aftermarket shifter (Hurst Competition Plus) or the original?
Also, you sure you have the the reverse 'lever' pointing down (not up like the two levers for the forward gears)?
If the levers for the forward gears are not in almost perfect neutral position, she won't go into reverse. You may need to adjust the rods for the forward gears.
Try disconnecting the interlock rod at the lever and see if she shifts into reverse.
Report back.

Hi 71,
When you pull up on the "T" on the shifter handle how far is it coming up?
Has the shifter itself been apart…. if so, was the alignment tool used when it was reassembled?
Disconnecting the interlock cable at the steering column lever will indicate if it's a shifter problem or an interlock problem.

Alan
Hi,
Here is the interlock cable and connections.
If you disconnect the cable either at the shift lever on the transmission or at the steering column you'll know for sure if it's an unlock problem or transmission/shifter issue.

Alan
I just checked and I do not nor ever had the cable on the car. The flange on the fire wall is there but I have never seen that cable nor understand what is does or how its used.....
Bumping......still cant get into reverse. Would like to get this adjusted before I put my exhaust on this weekend. Would appreciate any advice or reference to any documents explaining how to adjust the shifter so it will get into reverse.
Again I don't have the cable and not sure I ever did or even if the manual transmission came with it.
Did you replace the clutch? I had an issue getting my car into reverse after installing the rebuilt engine with new clutch kit-changed/moved nothing else in the linkage on the tranny (left the trans in car). Had to adjust free play with new clutch before I could get it into any gear including reverse.
Same clutch had very few miles on the Center Force 2
Stock shifter
I have new D-clips on all three linkages
***** NO I did not use the alignment pin to set up the linkages and I believe this to be my problem.
Looking for instructions on how to make and use the tool with the tranny in the car. I have been learning about this in bits and pieces. Would like to see a thread on this or instructions from start to finish.

I had to perform this when I lost my reverse linkage about 6 months ago. You don't need a special tool... just a small drill bit that will pass thru the alignment holes in the fingers (shifter linkage). All you are really doing is centering the shifter linkage in neutral position and then adjusting the linkage on the tranny to neutral position.
I can send you instructions, or you can go to Summit Racing or directly to Hurst web site and download instructions for installing shifter. Instructions will include how to align shifter and tranny linkage to neutral position.

Thanks Frankenvette, so loosing alignment can cause reverse lock out. This is what I think is the problem with my car.
Will this procedure work on a stock shifter? I understand that the alignment hole is not circular but a slot? Will I be able to do this while the trans is in given the tunnel to trans clearance?

It is my understanding that most stock shifters are still Hurst shifters, but I'm not 100% certain. I'm assuming all shifters have the alignment holes. I did this while my tranny was still installed. It's a tight fit to get your hand in there, but unless you have freakishly huge hands, you should be good to go. Just be patient.
