CONTEST: While I'm at it!
1) Needed routine diff. fluid replacement. Could not get off bolt off but I noticed that there seemed to be some sort of leak around my sparkplugs. I figured this may be due to a rich mixture at my carb.
Cost - $20.00
2) While tuning the carb, the metering rod fell inside the float bowl. It's an old carb, so why not replace it. Cost - $400.00
3) Replacing the carb, I realized that the bolts on the intake are stripped. New intake needed. - $200.00
4) Since I'm going for a new intake, might as well upgrade Cam as well. - $150.00
5) Oh yes, back to the leaking around the spark plugs. Replace the spark plugs. $30.00
6) Alternator belts looks a little loose; I think I'll replace that, too.
But I'm not done yet, so, don't count me out yet.
Total Cost of replacing differential fluid = $820.00

might as well swap the heads out while doing the cam.... i mean you have all the stuff off!!
might as well goto roller rockers..... ...while your there!!!
might as well get a blower./.......  :smash:
1. fixed valves, cost= $0
2. why not do a new cam, to be sure the lobes weren't worn and get some hp, I did the lifters, springs, seals, timing chain and cover also, cost= $300
3. I have to take the intake, carb, and air cleaner off too, so I bought an edelbrock intake, holley carb, K&N air cleaner, holley fuel pump, and the other bits and pieces up there, cost= $700
4. all new stainless steel brakes front and rear from SSBC and stainless steel braided hoses, cost= $700
5. splitfire plugs and MSD wires, $120

1. By a fire extinguisher to prevent further fires $130
2. Trouble shooting revealed the timing chain was messed up. So I get a new cloyes roller $60.
3. While I am at it lets do the exhaust. Headers $215, Mufflers $51 each, 2.5 inch exhaust pipe $300.
4. Why not replace the balancer cause it look bad. Streetdampnr $150
5. Get every thing back together and find the oil pan leaks. New Gaskets $30
6. While I have the oil pan off I find two pieces of piston skirt. ZZ4 $3550
I could keep going as now I need a new carb for the zz4. I also painted everything while I was in there. I also need alot of extras with the motor. Plug wire, clutch, belts, hoses, flywheel, etc. I would hate to know exactly what I have tied up in the car now.

What started out as a front suspension rebuild has evolved. Pull the engine. Take the block and get it looked at by the machinist. Crank needs turning. New resized bearings all around. Might as well get new bolts for the connecting rods. Rods now resized. Now, new cam, lifters, pushrods, timing chain, chain cover, heads, valve covers, intake, carburator, water pump, fuel pump. Now I have one nice engine setting on a stand ready to go.
Front suspension. Took control arms to get sandblasted. They sat at this guys place of business for 3 weeks and did not move. One day I went by and he was not there and the arms were laying right where I left them. So I picked them up and bought my own sandblaster. New suspension kit and springs. Everything is nice and new now just not installed. I bought a PS set up to make driving chores easier. All rebuilt and looks jam up. Ready to go. But to get to this point, there is no telling how much money is tied up.
Sorry for the ramblings.
Simple oil pan gasket change.....
exhaust pipe stud rusted to manifold..... cut em off
exhaust manifold bolt broke in head..... new heads
New heads?? lets do cam..rockers..push rods.. intake.. carb.. headers..valve covers..air cleaner..exhaust system
Might as well boil out and pressure test the radiator... change the trans fittings/hoses too....
Oh yeah.. oil pan gasket.. lets do rear main seal too
Hey... pwr steer fluid leak...lets rebuild and paint cylinder and valve, and new hoses..
Woops... dropped the strng pump, bent the pully... order new pully
Spring bushings need replacing... might as well do strut rods too..and ..oh what the heck, buy some shocks just to be sure. Spare tire tub could use some cleaning up... yeah, add that to the list.
All this since October of '01, and I'm not done yet. 90* in garage today... I'd rather be
