Does anyone know of a product that is used on bare metal to prevent rust from forming before the part can be painted or clear coated.
Several years ago the local body shop gave me a can of something that was clear and had the consistency of water and they said they use it on fenders and bare metal panels to prevent rust from forming between the time they prep and the time they actually paint. The guy said it was called "Kwix". I went back a few weeks ago to ask where I can buy this stuff and the person who gave it to me is gone and the others said they didn't know what I was talking about.
It worked great but I only had one pint. Does anyone know of such a product or where I can get something like this.
I don't want to clear coat paint everything.
Thanks for any suggestions or help.
what about por-15?-- i used it on frt end parts----ex-man-intake man.--------ex pipes--------- upper lower control arms-------everything under my73 ---------(except the fiberglass)--- now i believe it comes in all colors ---www.getrust.com---800-576-5822------------------------------------------------------------------carl-------http://www.geocities.com/carlclub2/index.html --
Por-15 is good. I use Eastwood's Coroless. I bought two small container of it, a year ago. And I've just started my second can. That's after doing the frame and the front end. All you have to do, is remove the loose, scaly rust. Then paint over it. The stuff is great for preventing and stopping rust.
Can also purchase a spray can (rattle can) product called "rust fix", works to stop rust, and act as a primer as well. Can be purchased at many auto parts stores.
MOLYKOTE - metal protector This product is made by Dow-Corning.
Here's the skinny right off the back of the spray can : forms a colorless , dry, waxlike film that protects against moisture and oxidation on all commonly used metals and alloys. It is effective in salt spray, high humidity, and industrial enviroments. It is compatible with most rubber and plastic parts as well as lubricants so it is not necessary to remove the coating before assembling parts or operating machinery. Film adheres under normal handling without fingerprint corrosion but can be easily removed with industrial degreasing solvents for subsequent painting.
We used it at work in the machine shop and for spinneret rust protection.
Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions.
I have used Eastwood's Corroless on my 68 restoration but was looking for something less heavy just as a temporary thing until I get a chance to paint the parts I have cleaned.
I will look into some of the other parts mentioned.
68 rdstr: nice car, I have the same engine in a 68 coupe and has been work in process since 1996.
CRC sells a few types depending on how long you plan to leave the parts bare. Moisture displacing rust preventatives is the general catagory. Usually I pick them up at the local graingers.
