Default 78 Heater

someone teach me about my heater system. I'm getting ready to drop a new motor in my 78 and decided I needed to swap the heater hose and flush the core before I do. I ordered a set of hoses, wich came as two long rubber hoses. However, the old hoses are different. One has a section of hard line in the middle and the other has a vacuum operated switch in the center. Is this something that the previous owner cobbled together? I cant find much help on the heater in my FSM or repair manual. Im assuming its a shutoff valve, but I don't understand why the lines came as two long pieces when the old setup is 4 with a hard pipe in one and the switch in the other. Any help would be appreciated.

The shutoff valve is actuated when you turn on the Air conditioning, it turn off the hot water to the heater core. I will look at my hoses tomm. and tell you what mine are like.

I went ahead and looked. All my heater hose is rubber. Are you sure you are not looking at the hose to your air con. evaporator?

Nope, it was the heater hose. After pulling it apart, it was obvious that someone had cobbled it together, or "bubba rigged" it. Thanks for looking.
