I am going to take a look at this 1980 model I found on Craigslist (link below), in the am. Anything specific I should be looking for (aside of the "normal" leaks, cracks, etc.)? Not an expert on Corvettes at all. How does this price look, on the surface? Thanks all.
Definitely follow this guide. I just picked up a 78 about 3 weeks ago. First thing i did was check the birdcage. After that went around the car looking underneath for any rust. I found a little bit, but nothing that screamed run away. One thing to look for that I didn't check well enough is body repairs. I looked around at what I could. However, I never stuck my hands up inside the body to feel around.
One valuable piece of advice, lift the rear end and check the play in the wheels. That was something I failed to do. Guess who needs a new set of trailing arms? Me....
Depending on the overall condition, especially the paint, I don't think the price is too far out of line. Interior look a little weathered in the pics. Lots of mods under the hood and that always makes me nervous.
Focus on the 10 rules above and you won't have a disaster.
OK, went and checked it out this morning. Body/paint is excellent. Some issues: speedometer broken, seat belt ripped as I tried to put it on (!), interior is probably a 5/10, needs windshield wiper switch. I would grade the exterior at least an 8, possibly 9/10. Reallly torn on this one...
If the paint is as good as it appears, newer tires, brakes work, engine runs and does not smoke, trans shifts properly and no bad grinding noises from the rear differential... $5.8K is a bargain for a C3. Even an '80 L48
