OK - I voted Haynes - for an off-the-shelf manual.
I find the Haynes manuals have the same information as a Chiltons,
but the pictures are better and more plentiful than a Chiltons.
A picture = 1000 words - and sometimes more.
You can't beat the shop repair manual - if you wanna spend the $$$.
I have a factory service manual and a Haynes. They're good at different things. The Haynes is better at tranny work for sure.
For my '97 Grand Prix I have a factory manual. Told me to drain & drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump. Turns out there's an access panel in the trunk that makes it a simple job. Not a Vette example, but that's the kind of thing where the factory manual can fall short.
An access panel to help change/check fuel pump ? What a great concept. I had to MAKE a hole in the floorboard of a vehicle !! But it was a Furd. Before I saw the light. :chevy
But speaking of manuals, I am thinking of buying one of the one piece, laminated electrical schematics...anybody use one of these? Only about $10. Figured I would tack it on the shop wall.
I don't limit myself to one source. One manual may have more specific info in one area and not another.
For my newer vehicles I've been buying the factory manual too.
Same here. When I want to take something apart or figure out how something was "supposed" to be I have found the factory assembly manual (AIM) to be worth it's weight in gold.
One source I hardly ever see mentioned is the factory/dealer 53-82 parts manual. I ended up with one of these and it's awsome! Front half is illustrations with reference to the parts listings in the second half. If you see one at a swapmeet, grab it.
I just purchased the latest Haynes manual for 1968-1983 Corvettes. Over the years I have always used Haynes manuals, they seemed the best all around for wiring diagrams and specs. I get home with me new one, take off the plastic wrap and to my dismay, their wiring diagrams were terrible! I was having problems with the interior lights in my 79 L82, I figured I could hit the book on that. The diagram for the interior lights was not even close to complete, there is not one single overall diagram for any model and very scanty ones for radio, lights and interior lights. I should have gone with a factory manual (my next purchase)
Just my 2 cents
