Need Lubrication to make it work.
" If overhauled, the housing should be refilled with steering gear lubricant( GM no. 1052084 or equivalent, meeting GM specification 4673M). NOTE: Do not use EP chassis lube and do not overfill the gear housing."
I went to a NAPA first, they said "Just fill it with chassis lube". Unacceptable!! I next went to the chevy dealer who looks up the number and sells me ( you guessed it!) chassis grease (1#12377985). Next, I went to a local vet shop here in Jacksonville (Ideal corvettes) He said " Don't use that stuff , those counter folks don't know what they are doing". He did not however know what I should use.
I know someone here knows the rest of the story!!

You are always welcome to call manufacturers tech lines. Just give them your specs, year of car what your manual says and how old the manual is...this can be important :D as many old manuals are recommending stuff that is no longer on the market but they can convert it to new. I have a customer that drive some goofy looking European thing..old as the hills, he now uses aviation hydraulic oil for his cars hydraulic system.. Comes in once a year :) The numbers listed are staffed by lubrication engineers...the guys who invent/test the oils we purchase as consumers not some page turning book worm.
ChevronTexaco 1/800-chevtek be sure to spell tek right..the other way gets you to a **** site and don't ask how I know
TEXACO 800-STARTLC
I would guess other have tech line numbers but I don't deal with them as we are branded Shell & Texaco
