I've been on the fence on whether to reassemble my Muncie 4 speed with the original case or go with an Autogear Supercase. The counter shaft hole is a bit loose in the front, OEM case. Probably the cause of some oil leaking. It appears the Supercase addresses this issue by providing a thicker front wall which allows for a plug to be installed ahead of the counter gear shaft. Uses a wider front bearing as well.
Problem I discovered is the counter gear (cluster gear) will not fit into the Supercase without removing the damping ring from the end of the cluster gear. Removal of this ring would be a permanent alteration which makes me hesitate. The vendor said the damping ring appeared on only a few years production, then was dropped. Has anybody had any experience with the Supercase or this modification? The Supercase lengthens the transmission by 3/16". Wondering if the rear mount will line up or would need the slot lengthened?
I don't ever plan to race the car or beat on it. My goal is to stop the leaks. If I stay with the original case I need to install a few heli-coils for the front bearing retainer, where this all started. I don't have time to have the case bushed. Maybe try some of the solutions others have suggested to seal off the front of the counter shaft.
Going with the Supercase may work out well or may send me off on a few detours making unplanned modifications. This is still an option though I wonder what other surprises are in store if I proceed with this case.
I run the AGE Supercase and the extra length means nothing, its still plenty of play for the yoke on the splined shaft.
I did a bit of checking, confirmed the yoke should still have plenty of space. I'm not sure whether the transmission mount will line up without extending the slots a bit.
My big question is whether anybody has used the Supercase, had to remove the ring on the end of the cluster gear. This ring appeared for only a few years from what I've heard. It was meant to reduce noise? If I remove the ring there's no going back.
I have the complete M22 Supercase with the Syracusa internals so i cant help you when it comes to the ring.
But call Riverside Gears and they may be able to answer your question.
Everuthing (even the transmission mount) fitted without any issues on my 1972.
The anti-chatter plate on the front of the 1" M-20 cluster gears started shortly after the start of the 1966 model year, and was used until the end of Muncie production(1974)...
If you have ever seen the destruction that this plate can do to the front of the main case when it comes loose, you wouldn't think twice about removing it...
I only leave these on if the customer wants it, after we talk about it...

Hope this helps... Crash
Are there any noticeable side effects after removing this ring? Gear whine? Etc.
I just got done using a Supercase and the M22 gearset for a year of road racing (in another car, not the Vette). It solved all the leak issues I was having. For the relatively low cost of the case, I would definitely do it. Of course, once you have the case, then you get the M22 gears, and on and on.....
