This wasn't what I was expecting to see..... Can someone clarify for
Me. Is this an HEI dist? GM original or aftermarket?
It has electric tach input.
I was expecting to see those little crab claw weights and springs....
That's the rotor. The weights are underneath it. KEEP GOING.
Ahh okey doke. I'm pretty new to this (can you tell?), so I'm going VERY slowly. I have about 17 marks on the distributor cap, base, rotor, vacuum canister, firewall, block, etc. etc. and roughly 47 pictures so I can get it back in to where it came from. I'm only changing intake and carb, plugs, wires, exhaust mani gaskets, fluids, etc., so I don't want to pull apart anything I don't have to. If that's a normal HEI, good enough for me. Car is a 73 w 454, but block is a 1970 CE, heads are cast in 72 and numbered correctly for a 73. The HEI was an upgrade of course (I learned that here, not implying that I know what I'm talking about) and other than the fact that it doesn't like spark plugs gapped higher than 0.035" it seems to be performing fine.
Thanks for input and help, Im sure more questions are to follow!

Change that cheap cheap rotor and lubricate the advance weights while you have it off. Also check the advance weights for elongated pivot holes, replace if needed.

Ugh I hate spiders!
Can you suggest a quality replacement rotor? Maybe a rebuild kit assuming I will have to replace weights as well?

Tumbler-
Why are you replacing the weights?
You might want to read up on this before you tear into the distributor with aftermarket parts. It's an excellent read and you'll learn tons of good info. TIMING AND VACUUM ADVANCE 101 by John Hinckley
Thanks, that was informative! So only change the weights if the holes are elongated as per suggestion above? Too bad, my katest order left Wilcox today I think, I should have added a new rotor???
