Default Forgotten oil galley plug

Hi guys,

I searched for this but came up empty. There is an oil plug, 9/16" stamped steel cup type, that is just above (or below if the engine is on a stand and upside down) the rear main bearing journal. It is in line with the threaded oil plug hole on the top left side of engine - china wall I think it is called. If you look through either hole you can see clear through. How far should that cup plug be pressed in? I did find a youtube video and the guy says 8 1/2" from the top surface (china wall) I just want to verify.

Engine is the original 350 L48 in my '77

Thanks,
Jim

It is 8.5 inches from the oil pressure sending unit hole at the top of the china wall. This plug segments oil being sent to the filter from oil being sent to the oil galleries from the filter. When you install the plug, make sure it it that distance and do a visual to make sure it is just past the passage that feeds from the pump/cap, which, when viewed from the bottom of the case would be the first passage. Once it just clears that passage, you have sufficiently segmented the oil passages and should be right at 8.5 inches from the top of the china wall. If you drive it too deep or too shallow, you will not have oil pressure or very low pressure.

Got it, thanks Gerry.
