All, I am battling hood clearance issues trying to find another intake instead of my Torker 2-0 intake (see thread a few posts down). I have a L88 2" rise hood but still have a few mm of clearance even with the torker. My car was originally a 350 car, but the previous owner put a 454 in it. Can it be determined if I have the correct engine mounts in the car? See pic. This is the only other thing I can think of that is causing me clearance issues.
Seeing how your photo when taken...the engine ground wire is blocking the most important part of the mount....it does look correct to being the correct later 'safety' style motor mount.
I am not 100% certain...but the intake manifold on a big block in that era are really low/shallow...so installing an aftermarket intake can create NUMEROUS challenges when trying to have a good clearance.
'Thinking' that lowering the engine at the mount is not the solution that I would be heading towards. That 'idea' will cause to 'other' area to pop up and then have to be addressed.
I get about 1 hood every few years that I have to raise even further due to issues of the intake/carb/air cleaner choices make it impossible to fit unless the hood is raised.
Dub, thanks. I don't plan on trying to lower the motor just thinking the mounts may be causing the engine to sit high. I want to do a 496 build but that would be pointless running a Torker 2 intake on it.
You might want to try an measure the distance from the center of the bolt to the engine block/ back of the motor mount. I think chevy made tall and short engine mounts and there is about 1" difference between the two. By measuring you could get an idea of if you have the tall one >2" or short <2".
I swapped the 350 for a 454 in my 73 using the mounts that were on the 350. My clearances are tight all over
Headers to frame/steering box, Fan to Shroud, Harmonic balancer to Frame, air filter to hood
You will need to keep an eye on the Crank pulley and fan clearance if you change the height of the mount
Not a lot of wiggle room with these motors
First of all, an L88 hood, should be higher than 2 inch lift. I need to measure mine, but I think standard is 4 inches. I could be wrong. Second, most performance intakes will have a higher rise than any of the stock intakes of the original engines. You most likely you need to order an L88 2" inch drop base air cleaner base. That is what I have. I have prob .5-.75 " of space left with a 3 inch filter.
I have Energy Suspension poly engine mounts.
