I've been trying to search the subject of aftermarket gauges in a late c3, but most posts are old and pictures are gone. anyone do this? I'm going with auto meter phantom gauges. fixing the factory units is just as expensive and the accuracy is still suspect. looking forward to what you all come up with.
Other than the fact that when I glance at the guages my vision is drawn to the upper 2 gauges. Oil Press and water temp are the most important to me. The fuel qty, and voltage are more or less secondary in importance. I am used to doing jet engine runs, the most important guages in an aircraft are always on top, i.e. N1 rotor speed, EGT. No matter how GM decided to mount them, its my car and I wanted them this way. Oh and thanks for the compliments from the other guys.
Replaced mine with the bigger autometer gauges, 2 5/8, but since mine is way modified I had no problem with making them fit. New center section to get built with even more mod's.
work in progess here.
Speedhut gauges with warning led (programmable threshold) in each small gauge. all 5 center gauges are wired to a bigger red alert light in the speedo/tach cluster.
wbo2 gauge is connected to a pair of innovate LC1 and an switch so I can check both sensors in the same gauge.
for the center gauges, I started by cutting the old console
I then epoxyed some alu brackets in the back (flat /angle) and finally used a flat aluminium plate cutted to fit over the brackets. sorry, no pics.
when everything was OK, I wrapepd the parts in 3M Di-NOC carbon style vinyl.
This might be slightly off topic but I think the new Dakota Digital VHX look pretty good. If I go with a gauge update after the new engine I'm leaning towards that.
