That's correct, you would have to change to an electric tach such as 75 to 77, or get a aftermarket tach drive HEI distributor.

Crane and Pertronics make a conversion for your OEM distributor to convert from points to an electronic pick up. Then replace the coil and you are ready to go. T

I had the tach in my 69 converted to electronic. Works great and no more worries with the tach drive distributor.

The easiest way is get a tach from a 75 -77 and replace the original, bolts right in. I believe some have used their original face plate to keep it matching. I have a spare from a 75.

I am not sure what a tach for a 75 or above cost, but bare in mind it will still be a 40ish year old tach. For around $225 you can get a new movement retrofitted into you original gauge, calibrated, and ready to go. I also converted to LED lamps when I put the dash back together, since this is not something I care to take apart again anytime soon.
