Do chambered mufflers resonate? I have flowmasters on my car now and they have an annoying resonation at 1500rpm. I'm about tired of them. But at any other rpm they sound awesome. Does anyone know if a chambered exhaust has this problem too?
Eckelers is the only place I've seen that sells them. Its nice that a lot of people on the forum ask about it. Most people I meet on the street don't like it.
That would be great if it worked but I can't really put in an H pipe. You see I have to take my 75 to be emmision tested so I have two exhausts, The stock 2-1-2 system and the true duals I switch them when I get tested. Because the exhaust is illegal no mufler shop will touch it. And unfortunatly I don't know how to weld (but it is on my list of things to learn). No one here running chambered exhausts???
I have A 74 coup 350 auto with chambered mufflers and yes they do resonate. I don't drive mine on the interstate much and that type driving is the only time my pipes resonate. I love the sound so I think the sound of the pipes when I stand on it and even when it is just setting at a stop light is worth it.
Sorry to add more salt to the wound but my Dynomax UltraFlows resonate at 1500 too and I have a crossover pipe installed. I also had a resonance, but not as bad, with the original mufflers I had on the car. They weren't factory stock mufflers but were close to it. I think it's just the nature of the beast. When doing some research on my 74 I found that the original exhaust system consisted of mufflers in the back and small resonators between the rear and the crossmember. Maybe GM had the same problem and cured it that way. Wish I could be more help
Thanks for the info guys. I thought it was just me and my loud mufflers I didn't realize it was such a common problem. Maybe I'll investigate the summit H pipe. I think I've seen it in there catalog. Would you put that before or after the crossmember or does it matter? I'll so some forum searching to see what I get. Once again thanks
Tony, my crossover is installed just in front of the crossmember. This keeps the rest of the pipes stock in case I ever want to lose the headers. I've seen some guys put theirs behind the crossmember but I don't think a foot in either direction would make a difference. Most header manufacturers recommend putting it as close to the headers as possible but it's only about 16 inches from the collector to the crossmember so like I said you've got about a foot to play with around the crossmember.
Installed Ecklers 2 1/2" SS chambered; Replaced 2" stock setup with Midas mufflers. YUK... Had installer cut the reducers at the end to keep it open 2 1/2" all the way. The end reducers closed the ID to 1 13/16".
Anyway, they resonate ~1500, but I love the sound from my BB. With a 3.70 rear I never stay near 1500 anyways. I would not trade in my chambered......
I'll live with it for now. I tried my old superturbo's this weekend no resonance but they were way too quiet. No fun at all. I put my flowmaster's back on. Thanks vettefixr if I do anything I'll try the crossover. Its a tight fit before the crossmember but its probably worth the trouble since I think I'd get a torque gain from it.
