Default frozen U joint bolts

(1976 cpe). OMG what a day! undertaking new U joints and shocks.

35 years of rust frozen fastenings! The outer U joint bolts are frozen SOLID. I've been whacking them with PBB for about three weeks, today I went to try and loosen things up.

I think I got two, maybe three, of the 8 bolts broken loose. Ya know, they ain't REALLY 5/8s, they're pretty close but that don't cut it when you're snortin' on the end of a 30" Johnson bar.

The shoulders have started to cave in! NOW WHAT?

If anyone has suggestions or reference to a thread I'd sure appreciate it. Flames are absolutely out of the question. The fellow that owns the shop made it very clear he doesn't want ANY fire used in the shop.

So, grinder, sawsall? ANYTHING!

Really good impact with 15MM 6 point impact socket. Loosen, tighten, loosen. tighten. Don't pound on it hard tightening.

Default thanks mako

I'll try and borrow a GOOD impact. Mine is a low budget special, not a lot of snort. I'll let you how it goes.

At this point I don't have much to loose!

15 MM is about 19/32. A slightly worn (used) 15 mm impact socket, pound it on, it will bite and the pounding might break the bond. Might have to open the socket up a little with a dremel. I have 2 new cheapie impacts and one old good one. Never use the cheapies.

Default next installment

Well, I borrowed a MagnaHeater. It is a magnetic field generator that creates some crazy heat.

You hold the rubber insulated paddle against the piece you want to heat and let it do its thing.

CAUTION: Do not use near any persons with metal implants of any kind or pace makers. Remove all jewelry. Wear clothing with plastic zippers and buttons only.

Sounds like Twilight Zone

I guess you shouldn't hold this Magnaheater between your knees.

Default progress

Well I figured out to upload photos, so is the situation after I fubar'd.

Here is the situation after I figured out how to deal with it.

The day wasn't a write off, I got the new shock installed. The bottom bushing is real bear!
