Default Windshield wiper going crazy

1980, new lectric limited engine harness, new wiper switch, reassembling car after full restomod work. I have power and the digital dash and radio work fine (so I am assuming the grounds are good)

with switch in OFF and accessory on, wiper motor starts in low

move switch up one click, motor continues in low

move switch up another click, the washer pump engages

move switch up to last click, motor goes to high.

pressing down for Mist doesn't change anything.

There is no off.

I pulled the switch, inspected, and reconnected (left out of dash) and the same issues occur.

Its a brand new (bought 4 months ago) switch, the motor worked perfectly before removal.

any ideas??? I am stumped!

thanks

Pat

You have a problem right off in your second sentence......BUT....WHY are you turning your ignition switch in the column to 'ACCESSORY' ????? What does the wipers do when you have the key ON but the engine NOT running??????

You either have a bad switch...or you are missing something like the intermittent delay controller....which you did not write if you have or not.

DO you know how to bench test your wiper motor when it is in the car and NOT using factory wiring???? The reason is....when you understand how it works.....the you can verify the ground switching positions on the 3 wire connector that attaches to the wiper motor. It is a quite simple system....because that is all the wiper switch is doing...is adding and taking away the ground to the outer two terminals in the 3 wire connector.

Are you sure the wiper motor is CORRECTLY GROUNDED?????

DID the motor work 'perfectly' AFTER you installed the new switch???? OR was if working perfectly BEFORE you added the new switch????

Clarification - this happens when the ignition is on, not on accessory.

I have never bench tested but I have seen the instructions so I can do it. The motor was good with the old switch - this new one went in when I reassembled the dash. Old one is toast from removing it.

Guess I'll learn the simple operation of the motor. thanks

You can use this to test the new switch, just be careful not to strip that lower mounting screw hole when you go back together.

thanks! your bench test video was enlightening and at the end when he described the runaway motor, it hit home.

Obviously I have a ground missing somewhere, although I am not sure how that would make the washer pump engage at detent #2....but I'll figure it out.

cheers

so I grounded every ground wire I can see coming off of this lectric limited engine harness, and it still goes nuts.

So I guess I will work forwards...the switch. Mine has the words WASH|WIPE on it, and the one on the Willcox site has the icon of wipers moving. Connectors hook up the same.

Right switch or wrong switch?
