Default Auto To 4 or 5 Speed Conversion

I am looking to buy a '68 427 Auto. How much is involved in changing the automatic to a factory 4-Speed. Or maybe a factory/Richmond 5-speed? And most of all, could this be done for about $1500? I've read that the hardest part is installing the clutch pedal. Will the driveshaft need to be shortened/lengthened? How about the shifter plate on the counsil? Boy.. I'm just chock full of questions today...
Thanks for any and all replies

try doing a search.. I'm sure the thread has been discussed to death. Wish i could help, but I don't have the knowledge. Post what you find out though. if it's only a 1500-2500 investment I may consider it

If my 4 speed crapped out today, I would replace it with a 5 speed.

pretty easy to do, removeable auto brace sure helps out. I had to get cross shaft for clutch, pedals, of course trans and shifter, bellhousing and driveshaft is different at u-joints, can't remember if shorter. Best bet is to find doner car and get everything, I did this, if you are going to use stock chevy trans, if tremec story is little different. Others can help you here.

I converted my 75 from automatic to standard. I located the proper clutch pedal assembly in poor shape for about $200 and refubished them. Installation required the drivers seat and steering column to be removed and hours of lying half and in or half out depending if you are an obtimist or pessimist and alot of cursing but 10 bolts later they were in. For a clutch i used a 85 one ton truck hydraulic system and it was a bolt in. The drive shaft needed to be shortened, no big deal. My removable crossmember need a small extension added to the front, again no big deal. I used a T5 at first and the shifter came out in the middle of the consel, I could have modified the shifter to make it come out more to the left but instead made a custom aluminum plate.
I later upgraded to a Tremec but never regretted making the switch.
Good luck and many here could talk you through the swap.
