I have tried to use the search function to see if this topic has been covered before however didn't come up with anything. I have a 1975 L82 4-speed. Only got to drive it for about three weeks this year after purchase just before it went into storage.
I had a great deal of difficulty selecting reverse the last two times I drove it. After pulling up on the shifter multiple times it finally slid into reverse.
Prior to that it worked fine with no unusual noises. Can someone please advise where the first place should be to troubleshoot it in the spring.
Thanks

My 2 cents, I would play with the shifter alignment and see if that will fix it.
Thanks for the link. Mine doesn't seem to get stuck in any particular gear or get hung up in any other way. Just when you lift the gear shift lever and try and slide it into reverse it stops. Otherwise once I lifted it up several times and it finally slid into reverse there was no problem deselecting reverse as per normal. And one through four work normally.
Ok thanks guys. It is in storage now but I will try that in the spring. I am pretty sure when it happened I was going from first to reverse....hopefully going from second will do it.
Slipping it into second works if there's a grinding noise in reverse. If it's physically difficult moving the shifter, the mechanism needs rebuilding. Waddya want from something 39 years old?

I will have to try that line with my better half and substitute 51 for 39.
No grinding while it is in reverse just a shifter that feels hung up.
Mike, if it is the mechanism would you go with just refurbishing it stock or do some of the aftermarket shifters work better. I do like the original look just curious what is the most reliable.
Thanks
I've got a Hurst unit on mine and prefer the feel over the GM unit. Both are reliable.
Me too. If the appearance is a deal, I've seen several vendors that have a stock looking stick that bolts on in place of the flat stick with the HURST logo. The reverse trigger is inoperative, but that's all.
Thanks, good to know. I looked online and saw some available that seemed reasonably priced...Hurst that is. Can someone give a rough estimate on how long it takes a shop to complete the installation ?
You could also take a little free play out of the clutch linkage , if there is just a little drag on the clutch it makes shifting into reverse a problem .
As someone stated above reverse has no sincro to help line everything up.
