got a couple bad parts off my 1980. Looks like a good winter for a rear end refresh. A large pack of sawzall blades and the trailing arms are out. gonna rebuild the arms, trans, as well as the rear end gets new seals...
Looks like You are off to a good start winter project on a rust free 4 speed 80. You probably all ready know all this if You read the forum but I would use Spicer brand U-Joints, I'd pop the Batwing off and check the Yoke Clearances. If the front Seal is not leaking I'd be temped to just leave it alone, and if it is be very careful to mark and put the Nut that holds the Pinion Flange back in the same exact spot.
got some help from a couple of "real good" friends and we tore the trailing arms apart last night. They are ready to be cleaned up and then we/ they can rebuild them. I am doing a lot of watching and trying to stay out of their way. That seems to work for them so I will just go with that!
Gale,
the front seal of the bat wing was leaking and I pulled it. It is at the shop being rebuilt. new seals all round and "have a look" when it is open. Too late to mark the pinion nut...
hope I can get it all to slide back together nicely. Guess I need some parts!!
