Here is the deal. You can buy those heads. You will need new springs and set them up. Likely retainers as well. You will need studs. You will need guideplates. You know the flow and castings are not the best. You know the parts used and where they were made. You know they are not the best option, ports are big for a relatively stock 454 and no compression increase. Or you can go with these with free shipping set up with roller springs, guide plates, studs, better flow through a smaller port and ready to go with about 1/2 point compression increase. Add everything up. The price difference is there but not as big as it would seem at first glance for the quality difference, as cast chambers and ports vs CNC Chambers and porting.
AFR 265 Ports flow 342/274 @ .600 lift, enough to support 600 HP with great port velocity for bottom end and midrange power.
Pro Comp 320 flows 331/251 @ .600 lift with a 55 cc bigger port.
Can't find flow info on the 300 but it is the same casting as their 320 with ovals instead of rectangular ports so knock some off the above numbers.

63Mako, the AFRs have raised exhaust ports. What do you recommend that has the exhaust ports in the stock location? Brodix 270 Race Rites? What else?

The brodix RR Oval works very well on 427 to 468 Cid that will see mid 6000 rpm range. The heads work well on a 489 to 505 for a max of around 6200 rpm.

Most don't have a $1200 Sunnen bore gauge for guides. With one of these all the surprises are found.

Straub, any other recommendations besides the Brodix?

I wouldn't even have an issue with buying the Chinese stuff, if it was quality. What concerns me is the day when as a country we've forgotten what quality is and inferior products become the norm. It's as simple as Christmas lights. I still have a set that belonged to my mother, yet when I end up buying additional lights from the import stuff, they are lucky to make the second season.
I do a lot of gun repair, I am finding that some of the stainless that's imported has enough carbon mixed in it to rust in spots. If they can't produce metal well enough to make pistol slides why should I trust the metal they use in cranks, pistons, rods and heads?

An engine is a combination of parts that are put together to reach a goal. A power goal of say 500HP at 6200 rpm there are a lot of choices that can reach that. 700HP from 468 their are a few parts that can do that.

Set you goals then work on list of parts to build a combination to reach the goal.

I would be happy with 500hp using my current Pistons and camshaft. I guess I need to find a Dyno to get a ballpark of where I am at. In addition to the power looking to save some weight.

That kind of power can be had with a good set of OEM iron heads and a hyd roller sir.

If you want 500hp and to save weight you could just go with an SBC.

Here is a forum member that used Procomps on a tripower forged 468 build to save some money. Ran a great time. 11.30 @ 124 MPH
